SETI@Home - The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

This is a fascinating project i've been involved with now, for a little over a year. Its a neat screensaver that you can install on your PC (they have clients for Windows, Unix, OS/2, NT, plus tonnes more) and it will download radio signals, and analyze them for anything extraterrestrial related. It then sends the results back to the SETI server, and requests another work unit to begin processing. I created a group on the SETI site in which users can join, and collaborate results. Right now, my group only has about 3 people in it, so we arent doing too well. At time of writing this, im in about 100,000th place (based on the number of units I have completed), and completed more work units than around 94.5% of everyone on the SETI project. To learn more about groups, or if you want to join my group, see further down this page.

Doesnt that take forever?

It wont take forever, but it does depend on the speed of your computer. I always have 2 computers running with SETI. I have my server machine (AMD K6-2 450Mhz, 96mb, Win2000) which takes about 26 hours to finish a work unit. My regular PC (Pentium 3, 550Mhz Win98SE, 64Mb) takes just a mere 8 hours on average per unit. The good thing about the Windows port of the SETI client, is you can specify wether analysis runs constantly, or just when the screensaver is on. This stops slower machines being bogged down whilst you are trying to use them. I always have analysis running, as I rarely notice anything whilst it is running. Your machine requires around 64Mb of memory to run analysis constantly, and keep your whole system running smoothly. Since starting with SETI, I have contributed over 5,000 hours worth of computer time to them.

Where can I get the software?

You can go to the downloads section on the SETI@Home website and get the Windows client from there. If you want a DOS version for NT or Unix, click Here.

How can I join the F1 Software SETI group?

Joining the group is incredibly easy, all you will need is your valid SETI email address. When you have it, simply click here to join our group, and your results so far will be transferred.

If you want to
see how our group is currently doing, you can view who exactly is in it, and how many units they have currently processed. Simply click here to open a new window and view the most up-to-date information. I have pictures at the bottom of the page of those currently in our group (and have submitted us a picture). If you are in our group, and want us to show your picture, email it as an attachment to me at [email protected]

SETI@Home Links & Titbits

These are just a few links I got for easy access to several different areas of SETI@Home, some of them are quite an interesting read.

Why do I do it?

Ive always been interested in UFO's and aliens, ever since I was a little kid. I first was introduced to the project when a friend of mine had the SETI@Home screensaver running on his Pentium 233 machine. At the time, I didnt have a PC of my own, and so couldnt install it. When I finally did get a PC, it was a P133, I installed it, and have had it running ever since. I keep it running in fact that I may actually find the signal that has the first signs of real intelligence from a far-off galaxy. With all the computers in the world today, if everyone who wasnt using their system contributed a few hours a day to the project whilst they weren't using their machines, the project would be much bigger than it already is, and signs of another intelligence may already have been found. The program doesnt take away any resources from your system (it only uses idle processor time) and its always looking for life, so I always leave it running in the background. Occasionally i'll pop it up and watch it for a couple of hours, as some of the graphs are very interesting as it computes them. If everybody contributed to the project, im sure we'd be able to find something.
